Jane Hicks, The Cosmic Possum
 
Betty Smith: Folksinger and Keeper of the LegendsJane Hicks IS the Cosmic Possum. Jane is a teacher, poet, and fiber artist from upper East Tennessee. The Cosmic One is the inspiration for the name of a mythical Appalachian Trail hikers' hostel in Sharyn McCrumb’s ballad novel, The Songcatcher.
 
Jane is a graduate of Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia, and she holds a Master’s degree from East Tennessee State University. Jane teaches intellectually gifted students in Sullivan County, Tennessee.
 
The Cosmic Possum wins
James Still Award for Poetry
Jane was awarded the prize for her poem, “Deep Winter” at the Appalachian Writers Association Conference in Williamsburg, Kentucky. The conference was held July 12-14, 2003.
