| Betty Smith,
Keeper of the Legends Betty Smith has performed, taught, and shared the traditional music of the South for over thirty years in classrooms, concert halls, workshops and festivals. She has combined her musical roots and talents with her skills as a communicator to present musical experiences that have been described as “unique” and “magical.” ![]() Betty Smith has been the recipient of numerous ballad and dulcimer awards and in 1982 she was awarded the Basom Lamar Lunsford Award for significant contributions to the folk traditions of the southern mountains. Recognized as an accomplished teacher, Betty Smith has taught college courses in Folk Music, Appalachian Music, Elementary Music and Dulcimer, as well as classroom teaching in Early Childhood. Her music curriculum for early childhood has been published by Open Court Publishers and Childrens Music Workshop. She holds a degree in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and M.Ed. from Georgia State University. In 1994 she received a UNCG Alumni Distinguished Service Award.
